6. Runyon Canyon

VERSE 1:
I know a very special place, where we can hide and play
It isn't very far from here, Yes we can go today
I'll take you and you take me, hold each other's hands
We'll make love underneath the trees, and flow with nature's plan
Flow with nature's plan... Ooooooooooooooh

VERSE 2:
Cinnamon and cactus trees, line our lover's lane
The palm leaves make the earth smell sweet,
the air cries out for rain
Hidden in the city, is a place so pret----ty
The moment that you see it, it will take your breath awa--ay
Take your breath away... Ooooooooooooooh

VERSE 3:
I know a very special place, where we can hide and play
It isn't very far from here, yes we can go today
Hidden in the city, is a place so pretty
The moment that you see it, it will take your breath away
Take your breath away... Ooooooooooooooh

I had a girlfriend who lived with her, shall we say, theatrical family in this marvelous neighborhood in the the foothills of Hollywood. They lived in this rambling old mansion on an overgrown estate. Although they had movie stars as neighbors, their house was very friendly and very lived-in. Their street ended at a gate, and beyond was a magical place that enchanted me.

The story was that it was the old Errol Flynn estate and a place that at one time probably hosted the most elegant parties in Hollywood. But now, it was overgrown and wild. One could see that once, perhaps in the 20's , this land was sumptuously landscaped with exotic cacti and plants. I don't know how many decades the estate had been in decay, but the plants kept growing, and it had turned into a jungle. Walking into this land was like entering into another world of strangeness with a hint of the wild. At the end of the canyon was a flat slab of concrete & perhaps a stage where Errol and his movie star friends (Rudolf Valentino? Charlie Chaplin?) would put on plays and skits for each other, There was a cactus house, literally cactus grown into a room, nearby. This strange and beautiful place was only a few blocks from downtown Hollywood, and no one knew it was there. A place where you could escape from the city, pass through the iron gates, and enter into fantasy and imagination. The city finally found this place, tamed it a bit, and turned it into a park, The park is called Runyon Canyon.
